FAQ

Guided by a UVic Computer Science Student Mentor, and supported by Industry Experts, you and a team of 3-4 other students will design, code, and deploy a full-stack application centered around a given theme.

High-school students, or home-learners, in Grade 9-12 living & studying in British Columbia, Canada, who have an interest in learning through/about technology. Must also be committed to cultivating a positive, safe, & inclusive learning environment for everyone in accordance with our Core Values & Code of Conduct.

We will accept a maximum of 24 students per cohort.

The program is based around building a full-stack web application in teams of students. Through this you will learn Javascript, HTML, CSS, SQL, hosting, Node/Express/EJS, and user authentication. You will also learn Agile and Git, which are widely used in the tech industry. By the end of the program, you are guaranteed to have a fully-functional application that will be hosted online forever! You can view all past projects by clicking here.

No coding experience is required. We ask for this on the application so we can organize teams effectively, but your level of experience will not impact our decision. Everyone completes a Pre-Techccelerator course beforehand to gain the necessary skills.

Once you have been accepted into a cohort, you will be sent a link to complete a short course that will walk you through building a fun personal website, and teach you all the technical skills you need to know to be successful in the program.

We start each day with a standup (Agile) which gives every team a chance to share their progress. Then, one of our mentors will give a lesson on the subject of the day, for example, Database Design. After that, you will join a breakout room with your team and mentor and work to meet the goal of the session.

Due to ongoing challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Techccelerator will be virtual, hosted in real-time on Zoom and using a collection of digital tools.

You will need a computer that has a relatively recent OS. Mac, Windows, and Linux are all acceptable. Your computer must also have a webcam and microphone so you can fully participate. Accepted students will complete a Pre-Techccelerator course, which will walk you through installing the (free) software you need to do the program.

The number and size of cohorts will be determined based on the number of applications we receive.
