Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from past applicants.
Is HighTechU just about computers and coding?

No, HighTechU is about much more than just coding. Our programs are about empowering youth with the diverse skills and knowledge they need to succeed and thrive in the 21st century workplace.

Who is it for?

HighTechU is for interested high-school students who are looking to develop a network of like-minded peers and mentors, build professional soft skills, and explore how technology can be used to positively impact the world around them.

How do I apply?

HighTechU is membership based, allowing students to access a variety of learning resources. Membership Applications can be downloaded from the HighTechU website and are submitted via email. Prior to membership being granted, applicants will be required to complete a consent, waiver and indemnity form.

What is the selection process for membership?

Applications are reviewed by a selection committee on a monthly basis to ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria. Once reviewed, applicants will be contacted with our decision within 30 days.

Due to limited resources of this new program, membership will be capped at 100 students for the 2019-2020 season.

Is there a cost?

Applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable application fee of $10, which will also cover annual membership fees for the 2019-20 season. Further details on payments will be provided upon receipt of a completed application. Please note that annual membership fees are subject to change, and specific components of HighTechU, such as the Skills Academy, will involve additional costs.

HighTechU is committed to ensuring we remain accessible to all students, regardless of socioeconomic status. As such, we are committed to working with students and families to ensure that fees do not impact participation.

How long does membership last?

Memberships last from the date of acceptance until the following August and can be renewed annually. In the event that an applicant/member is deemed to be a hazard to the safety and/or rights of others, or has violated the guidelines and expectations set out for all members, HighTechU reserves the right to dismiss or refuse membership.

What are the membership critera?

Students eligible to become a member of HighTechU must satisfy all four of the following criteria:

  • Be a high-school student, or a homelearner, living and studying in BC.
  • Have an interest in learning through/about technology.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the HighTechU Core Values (see below).
