[Postponed] A Deeper Look Into Quantum Computing: A Hands-On Experience with Jupyter Notebooks and Qiskit

Event Details

This event finished on 22 March 2020

We are quickly approaching the limits to everyday computing. Quantum Computing is an emerging technology that is expected to overcome some of these limits and revolutionize computing. Today, the first quantum computers are accessible and programmable over the internet. With improvements in accuracy and power of quantum computers, the demand for a skilled workforce in Quantum Computing increases significantly.

This 2-day workshop provides a deeper look than our 1-day workshop—offered prior to the basics of the exciting area of Quantum Computing. This workshop is intended for high-school aged youth and will introduce some mathematical understanding behind basic principles of Quantum Computing. Concepts encountered during this workshop include qubit systems, quantum gates, measurement, superposition, entanglement, how to send two classical bits through one qubit (superdense coding), and quantum teleportation. As in the prior workshop, we provide hands-on experience on quantum computers and simulators, using Jupyter Notebooks and IBM’s open-source Quantum Computing framework Qiskit.

This workshop is intended for high-school aged youth. No prior programming experience is required to attend. Students who attended HighTechU’s first workshop “Quantum Computing: A Hands-On Experience with Jupyter Notebooks and Qiskit” are also encouraged to attend.

This event is sponsored by Callysto, an initiative of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, and made possible through the support of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.

Beyond being a core value, Diversity is a cornerstone of HighTechU. Through our learning community, we aim to create a safe and welcoming environment where all persons, regardless of race, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status, can discover and explore the world of technology and their role leading future innovation.

This event is presented by HighTechU, an initiative of the University of Victoria Faculty of Engineering, in partnership with the Department of Computer Science.
